How can you tell if you are allergic to chia? By the way, should pregnant women take it?
We will we answering all these questions and more today!
Side effect 7: You may be allergic to chia seeds.
While rare, some people may be allergic to chia seeds. In some cases, people have reported rashes and hives breakouts, watery eyes, breathing trouble and swelling of tongue.
Side effect 6: Chia seeds may thin out your blood and lower your BP
Chia seeds contain omega 3 fatty acids, but doctors do not consider them to be of the “good” kind. The omega 3 fatty acids may thin out your blood and reduce your blood pressure. This is usually a good thing, unless you have low pressure, or are already taking blood-thinning medications. In such a scenario, it is best to consult the doctor about taking chia seeds.
Side effect 5: Chia seeds may not be suitable for pregnant or breast-feeding women
Not much research has been done on how chia seeds may affect pregnancy or breast-feeding. So it is best to stay away from untested food if you are pregnant or lactating.
Side effect 4: Chia seeds may not be good for prostate health.
Chia seeds are rich in alpha linolenic acid. According to healthline, research suggests that a diet with excess alpha linolenic acid may increase the chances of developing prostate cancer. The risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age after 40. It is seen more in men close to 60 years of age.
Side effect 3: Chia seeds are high in lectins.
Chia seeds are high in lectins and can cause digestive distress. Nutritionists recommend using milled chia seeds instead of whole. Start with a small amount & increase slowly.
Side effect 2 : Chia Seeds can lead to digestive distress
Chia seeds are packed with fiber. However, too much fiber may not be good for you, especially if you are not used to it. Too much fiber intake may result in bloating, diarrhea, constipation, pain & discomfort. To avoid this, start with only a small amount.
Side effect 1: Eating dry chia seeds may block your food pipe!
Chia seeds can absorb water and expand in volume. So if you swallow dry chia seeds and then drink water, they may expand midway inside your food pipe or esophagus and cause a blockage! This happened to one person, and he had to be rushed to the emergency room where doctors had to clear the blockage manually!
This can be a problem especially with small children and senior citizens. It is essential that you soak chia seeds in water first and then eat them.
Also always start small and look out for side effects!
