The WHO has declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, but the disease is unfamiliar to the general public. Here's what you need to know about monkeypox, which has nearly 16,000 reported cases worldwide and is still counting.

Aside from the wildlife reference, the only similarity between monkeypox and chickenpox is that they are both viruses. Monkeypox, on the other hand, is most similar to smallpox, which was eradicated in 1980. Some scientists are concerned that monkeypox will mutate and become a greater threat to humans.

Monkeypox got its name because it was first discovered in 1958 in research colonies of monkeys. Monkeypox symptoms are similar to smallpox including fever, headaches, muscle aches, and a lack of energy.

The good news is that the strain of monkeypox that is sweeping the globe isn't particularly lethal. But it could be fatal in children under the age of 8, people with compromised immune systems, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. The current outbreak is being spread through human-to-human contact. Because the virus can spread through skin-to-skin contact, you should keep a safe distance and wear protective clothing. You should also dispose of any contaminated bedding, clothes, or towels.
