Welcome to Ask the Doctor where you send us your questions and we do our very best to get you answers.
This question is from from Sonya:
Is Restless leg Syndrome a sign of nerve damage or part of peripheral neuropathy?
Hi Sonya. So, RLS can sometimes be a part of peripheral neuropathy or it can be an isolated condition without neuropathy.
When you ask the average doctor what causes restless leg syndrome, they’ll say the cause is unknown but here’s what research reveals, and also what we’ve discovered in our practice after treating more than 15, 000 cases of peripheral neuropathy. There are quite a few things that can cause RLS. For instance, low dopamine levels can cause RLS, although I will tell you from experience, this isn’t the most common cause.
Other more common causes are iron deficiency and chronically low vitamin D levels, which would be when your vitamin D is lower than 50 ng/mL. Also Insufficient levels of magnesium, calcium and/or potassium will definitely result in RLS. So, quite often if my peripheral neuropathy patient complains of restless legs at night, besides placing them on Nuphoria Gold and Nerve Defense, I’ll also place them on 1000 mg of calcium, 300 mg of potassium and 500 mg of magnesium glycinate or bisglycinate (don’t use magnesium citrate for this because in many people, with 400 mg or more it can cause loose stools, This typically doesn’t happen with magnesium glycinate).
I also want you to be aware that neurotoxic food additives like MSG, Aspartame, High fructose corn syrup, Sucralose, Fluoride and heavy metals can induce or worsen restless leg syndrome.
