If you live to be 80, you will have put a full meal into your mouth roughly 87,000 times. And every time you do that, a 30 feet long single tube that starts at your mouth and ends at your anus takes in this foreign substance called food and gets to work extracting nutrients your body needs.

Given the daily assault this tube faces, it runs into a few problems that are remarkably common across the globe. Their ubiquity has also meant that every culture has, over the years, attempted to explain and fix those problems.

Predictably, modern day social media, particularly in India, is filled with random misinformation and pseudoscience about this 30 feet long tube. There is no dearth of people claiming to diagnose fix gut issues, IBD/IBS, acid reflux and lactose intolerance. Unsurprisingly, pretty much everything you see from influencers on social media on “gut” issues is mostly nonsense.

In this video, @DrEDUCATION and I start at the mouth and explain the science of the most common digestion related problems that occur. This is general knowledge we must all know given we eat every single day. This information should help you discriminate between factually correct information and pseudoscience/quackery on the internet.

PS: this is general science knowledge, not medical advice
